The concept : “Point concentration of solar energy by multiple flat or slightly curved reflective surfaces”
Basic components : The Solar Tower concentrating solar mechanism is composed of numerous heliostats and the solar tower. Each heliostat consists of the reflective flat or slightly curved surface (mirror), the metal structure and the tracking mechanism whereas the solar tower of the supporting structure and the receiver.
Operation principle : The heliostats track the sun in two axes in order to concentrate the solar irradiation to the receiver located at the solar tower. The receiver converts the concentrated irradiation to useful heat.
| Basic Characteristics
|Shape of mirrors
||Flat or slightly curved
|Type of concentration
|Sun Concentration Ratio
||500 - 5000
||300 – 1000 oC
|Heat Transfer fluid
||Molten salts, thermal oil, air, two phase water
Basic Applications : The produced heat from the Solar Tower can be used for electricity generation by driving an engine connected to an electrical power generator and for thermochemistry by driving a reactor.
Technology variations : Multiple receivers, Moving heliostats, Secondary reflector
